Respect. A powerful tool when it’s in play. And it’s not just young to old, old to young, non-experienced to the experts. It’s as simple as a please or a thank you, a gesture of appreciation to some small favour someone’s done for you.
I have a lot of film students out on productions with me. I had one recently, who followed me while I was editing a commercial in a high end edit suite. This young student sat in as the editor kindly showed what he was doing, sharing knowledge about the process, offering tips.
At the end, as we were getting in the lift, I turned to the student and asked if he had said thank you to the editor. I knew the answer.
I said to return to the edit suite and do the right and respectful thing.
Now that’s what I’m talking about….not taking people for granted.
